As a suspense author, I don't get to read as much as I'd really like to. I treasure my reading time, and I'm probably a little too picky. But I read the first chapter of this one, and I knew I'd found not only a good book, but a new author to read. I'm really impressed that this is Cap Daniels' first book. The writing is excellent, the editing is professional, and the story is just a lot of fun. The Florida details are wonderful - I'm a Florida native, and he took me back home. I liked it so much I told my readers about it, and now I'm having fun watching them discover Cap Daniels. I'd love to take the credit when he hits the bestseller lists, but I can't. It's his writing that's going to make that happen. Bottom of the ninth, one out, runners on second and third, your team is losing by one run and the home team’s slugger is coming to bat. What will the visiting team do in this situation? Well, in the real world, something that does not exist in this book, the visiting team would intentionally walk the batter, loading the bases, thus setting up a force out at any base, and a possible double play. Instead, the visiting team pitches to the batter, a strange play ensues which permanently injures Chase Fulton, destroying his dreams of playing in the Major Leagues. BTW, this scene is the best one in the entire book, the writing is very descriptive and captivating, just too bad about the strategic faux pas by not walking the batter to load the bases. Kind of like saying, “Other than the mouse turd, that was the best ice cream I’ve ever had.”Noting the flaw in the otherwise excellent opening scene, I warily continued onward. The writing became pedestrian and it soon became apparent the book was one impossible event after another. Comic book heroics. Normally, I would have put the book aside shortly into this narrative, but I was curious to see just how far the author would dare go with clichés and with stretching reality. Boy, I was not disappointed! Without spoiling it, here is a partial list. People that have read the book will recognize the full scenarios by reading these brief phrases.Killing of a spy trainee, horse’s eye, free yacht, WWII veterans as spy recruiters, athlete taking up cigar smoking and drinking on a whim, Chase’s parents secret life, $10 million payday, falling in love with your assassin, deputy CIA director talking spy operations openly, shooting a gun underwater through dry bag, drinking booze and kissing with recently stitched-up tongue, inexperienced 23 year old behaving as if he had the operational spy knowledge of a 40 year old, evil guy doesn’t have an evil twin, he’s evil triplets! Both of the assassin’s parents were in their 50’s when the assassin was born. On and on it goes. Think of the action scenes in the movie “The Kingsman” but even more absurd.I will not be reading more in the series.
